The SOW (Sertoman of the Week)

OUR SOW:
1.   . . . was born in Greensburg, PA, SE of Pittsburgh.

2.   . . . attended Fort Allen elementary school.

3.  . . . . was a Cub Scout, but couldn't make it to "Boy".  He did, however, volunteer for Habitat for Humanity one week in the summer.

4. . . . played every sport there was.  Swim team, girls, football, baseball, girls, basketball, girls.  He even played golf, but wasn't good enough to make the team, "only" shooting in the low 80s.  (Now, anyone will tell you that I am not a golfer, but isn't "low 80s" pretty good!??!  Oh yeah . . . . he also LETTERED in three sports, receiving the GOLDEN ARROW AWARD

5.  . . . .was in the Hempfield Enrichment Program throughout elementary school, performing a different Shakespeare play each year, playing the lead in the sixth grade Christmas play.  (He said he wanted to be the pizza delivery guy, but his IQ was too high!)

6. . . . . . had his first kiss on December 26, 1991, when he was 19.  Marisa Zellie.  (C'mon guys, surely you know who this is by now???)

7. . . . . . his worst experience in high school was that Marisa never like him as much as he liked her.

8. . . . . . graduated from Penn State University with a BS in Finance and a minor in Management Information Systems.

9. . . . . . has worked for Teksystems in Baltimor, MD, BlueGreen in Myrtle Beach, SC, and CBL Properties.

10. . . . . . this Sertoman said he joined our club because he believes it "will be going to something he believes in and can put to good use".  He says to Work hard, play hard, be thankful for what you have, and give back.  Plus, he says we "crack him up".  All good reasons to welcome this new Sertoman.  See below to find out who this guy is!

Thanks to Dave B. for the pics!

For those of you who noticed, yes, it's been a while since I've had a newsletter out.  With my purchase of a new business (a coffee shop in Loveland), I'm gone from pretty early in the morning 'till pretty late at night, and I just haven't had the time to sit still for a while.  Hopefully, that will change at some point.

Dani Korkegi (a long time ago), at the beginning of a discourse on the history of the cellular telephone, bragged on Timmy and her 10th anniversary!!

Ken Borrett recently bragged that he won a Disney Cruise, including a day at Disney/Epcot, 4 days on a cruise, and a trip to Nassau where they stayed on a private island.
His second brag was that 42 years ago, in Sioux City, Iowa, he and the lovely Kay were married in a Lutheran church.  He mentioned several times that it was "pretty hot".  Curiously enough, Ken also bragged that Tad celebrated his 44th birthday just a few days ago.  hmmmmmm.

Tad Borrett bragged that he swam the Horsetooth 10K.  Out of 70 participants, he came in 6th Place.  WOW!!  His dad later bragged on just what a performance it was . . . seems Tad swam this 10K in 2 hours, 20 minutes, sprinting the last 1,000 yards with (as it turned out) with a kid 14 years younger, beating him at the finish.

Shawn Dunnigan bragged on Jim Manning for donating $50 for Heritage Christian Academy.  Seems Shawn is playing 100 holes of golf on Sept. 28th as a fundraiser.  If you'd like to help him with a contribution, give him a call:  212-4377.

Gary Cassell bragged that he and Colleen recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary!

Dave Blomberg bragged that his in-laws had their 65th wedding anniversary recently.

Rod Allerheiligen bragged on his15 year old grandson, Taylor, who recently flew to Oregon to try out for the Portland Patriots WHL hockey team!  He's too young to draft, but they CAN give him a letter of intent.  Can you imagine!??!  15 years old!

Ryan Kruse bragged recently that he met Dick Anderson, of Miami Dolphins fame.

Carl Glaser bragged that, with a son's recent graduation from UNC, it's "Two down and one to go".

Bob Kopplin bragged on a 40th anniversary (with the same woman!) with a check for the Sertoma Foundation, as has become tradition.

Ronny Bush bragged on Tom Bryan, who participated in the Leadville 100, a 100 mile bike race.  This would be the same race that Lance Armstrong won on a nearly flat tire!

An extremely modest man was in the hospital for a series of tests, the last of which had left his bodily systems extremely upset.

Upon making several false alarm trips to the bathroom, he decided the latest episode was another and stayed put. He suddenly filled his bed with Diarrhea and was embarrassed beyond his ability to remain rational.

In a complete loss of composure he jumped out of bed, gathered up the bed sheets, and threw them out the hospital window.

A drunk was walking by the hospital when the sheets landed on him. He started yelling, cursing, And swinging his arms violently trying to get the unknown things off, and ended up with the soiled sheets in a tangled pile at his feet.

As the drunk stood there, unsteady on his feet, staring down at the sheets, a hospital Security guard, (barely containing his laughter), and who had watched the whole incident, walked up And asked, "What the heck is going on here? "

The drunk, still staring down at the bed sheets in amazement, replied:

"I think I just beat the shit out of a ghost ! "

                       Happy Halloween!!!

Norm bragged that just last week (so, this was over a month ago) he went to his 40th high school class reunion, and said "it was fun".  He tells us that his former classmates could recognize him, but he didn't know them

Tom Kula has an opportunity for a luck few:

Last year was the first year we kind of made it a Sertoma group event-Tim Miller and some of his buddys ended up being the only ones to go-and of course we had a blast as well as great hunting.  Randy Willard and Dan Kaup were suppose to go but had conflicts at the last minute.

Any way so far Randy Willard and Chris MacDonald have committed to go plus my son and I.  There is room for 3 more hunters the week of November13.

When:    11/13-15--there maybe other weekends available if someone wants to put together a group for a different weekend-they can just check with me.

Where: Kula farm located at Gettysburg, SD (central SD)

Tom (r), with friends, and over 2 dozen murdered birds

Cost    $150/per day per gun-gives you access for hunting on over 4,000 acres of prime pheasant habit and lodging-lodging is a modern mobile home with 5 beds, 2 bathrooms and a full kitchen.

Each hunter is responsible for their food, transportation, gun and hunting license.

Hunting conditions are absolutely the best in history this year-the pheasant population will likely set an all time high, birds are everywhere.  These birds are all wild-natural/there are no pen raised birds.  The farm is large enough you can hunt new areas each day.

Ground cover is extremely thick again this year-that's why we are going a little later in the season-a good hunting dog is a big plus.

Interested hunters can call Tom at 231-9356.

Larry Abrahamson told us that on Saturday he'll be a year older than Carl!  Unlike Carl, however,
Larry celebrated club TRADITION with cold, HARD, CASH!

September 25th . . . PICNIC LUNCH on the patio at the Lincoln Center!

Lee Cooper recently related to us how he met his wife, Sonnie, when he was 19 years old, and in college.  At 20 they were married, and it's now 57 YEARS LATER!!! CONGRATULATIONS!!!

We've been having just enough guys turn out for the games.  John K reports that for the first game we earned $1,971.19 just from the $67.50 we receive for the 20 guys that show up.  THAT'S why it's important to be there!  We also received $621.19 in tips, for a grand total of almost $2,600.  Not bad for a fun day!!
Just a reminder . . . for beer sales, wear our green Sertoma shirts w/black or blue pants.  NO blue jeans.

Jim Manning, after performing flag maintenance duties with Jim Nutt for many years, has asked if someone might be interested in the position.  He says it takes "maybe one hour/week, if that".  Give him a call if this is something YOU could handle, at 222-3747

Shawn Dunnigan had a nice "Thank You" note for those who helped him participate in this year's Relay for Life.  He said with the club's $500 donation, he helped raise over $2,000 for cancer research!

Bobbo Kopplin told us that he celebrated his twin brother's 63rd birthday recently, and had
a check for the Foundation to prove it!

Mr. Benton, recently returned from St. Louis, I think he said, had a brag for Colorado's GREAT weather!  He said while he was there it was a constant 98 degrees with 98 percent humidity.  YUCK!

Roger Sample bragged on his wife, Susie's THIRD hole-in-one this year!  He detailed the courses for us, but I was so flabbergasted by THREE in one year, I forgot to listen!  WOW!  What are the odds???

Lee Cord had a $5 brag for our Board of Directors buying a ($750) table at this year's Brainiac Bowl on October 3rd.  If you'd like to fill one of those seats, contact Lee at 215-9658.
UPDATE:  The 8-person team for the Brainiac Bowl appears to be Carl Glaser, Dave Williams, Dick Ziporlin,  Bill Brown, and spouses.  This is NOT set in stone, however, so if YOU'RE interested, call Lee!

Bill Brown had a brag for fellow member Dave Williams, who had a birthday on September 17th.

Concurrently, Dave had a check for the Sertoma Foundation in honor of his birthday.

Greg Anderson has raised quite the daughter . . . Former Sertoman, Greg visited the club last Friday, and bragged on his daughter, Sadie, and her rugby exploits.  CLICK HERE to see her latest adventure at Penn State, complete with video!

Bobbo Kopplin (astute treasurer that he is!) reported at last week's meeting that he recently received a check from "an anonymous donor" for that donor's 63rd birthday.  John K. (anonymous donor extraordinaire) expounded on this fact by saying he's "a day younger than Dave Williams."

EX-SOW, Brad Burns (R), hands off the trophy to Okey Reese, new SOW!

Shawn Dunnigan had a brag for Ronny Bush' athleticism.  (But, then again, who doesn't??).

The Board has decided that we will keep track of our man-hours on a monthly basis.  There will be a sheet passed around at a board meeting once/monthly, and you will be responsible for recording your hours.

If YOU know of a place where our lunch can be help beginning next June, please tell someone on the Board.  Seems the Lincoln Center is going to be remodeling (again!), and we will have about SIX MONTHS in which we will have to find someplace else to meet.

The new place must (1) Be large enough to hold all of us (2) Have kitchen facilities for the Rainbow, and (3) Not cost and arm AND a leg.  Be thinking!!
