SOW (Sertoman of the Week)

Apparently I missed a SOW or two, as Mr. Miller tells me Okey handed off to Jamison,
who gave it to Ryan.  So, updates as I get 'em.

The amazing Power of Cosmetics!

Bill Green recently returned to the club for a free lunch, and told us what a pleasure it was to be back, even for a short while.  He told us of many short trips he and Pat have taken, and of all the brew pubs around, and of the friend they've made, who saved them from a possible poison oak affliction.

Well, our annual golf tournament is shaping up . . . . it's at Mariana Butte again this year.  The cost is $120 if you pay before May 1st, or $135 if you procrastinate.  There will be raffle prizes awarded this year, as well as a possible $10K payout for a hole in on on the (Par 3) 8 hole!  Mr. Tarantino tells us the, so far, "we have a foursome" for the Arizona Scramble coming up.

17 guys were disappointed Friday night last . . . the Rockies game was rained out.  Talk about your turd floater . . . . certainly not baseball weather.  Don tells us that the game has been rescheduled, however.  Apparently the Rockies never reschedule, but somehow it's been arranged for this trip to happen on May 26th, with the Rocks playing the Diamondbacks.  Way to go, Don!!

Softball is a GO!  Mr. Reiter tells us that the only reason we want to start a softball team is to attract some members who are UNDER 50.  Even sadder, Josh Benedict, in charge of organization, tells us "Don't look at me . . . . all I know are you guys".  He tells us we have "Thursday night games every Thursday", through July.  That makes 12 games maximum, plus the playoffs.  Mr. Burns wanted to know "how high the tee is".  Reiter, Benedict, Burns, Reese, Kaup, Dunnigan, Bryan, Martin, Glaser, & Dusek have signed up, to date.  The club is picking up the cost of doing this, so don't hold back just 'cause you're broke.
If YOU would like to be a Charter Member of Sertoma's first softball team in DECADES, contact Josh at
joshuabenedict@hotmail.com or 219-6819 .

Once again, we are scheduled to help with Realities Ride/Beer Bash.  This year we will be participating on May 29th and 30th, a Saturday and Sunday.  You should check out their web site:  http://www.realitiesride.com/

John K. tells us that CSU only has 5 home games this year instead of the usual six,
so we're looking at a shortfall of 2 grand . . . . so everyone needs to come out to help at the
Realities Ride to maximize sales.

The TRULY AMAZING power of cosmetics!

Jim Manning tells us that we put in over 100 man hours of work on the corral in Loveland!  Since last July, we've performed over 850 man hours of community work.
NEXT Saturday, we are scheduled to do a little work for Neighbor-to-Neighbor, at 1550 Blue Spruce.  This is the same place (and doing the same thing as last year) as we went to last year.  This is trimming of shrubs and trees, preparing the place for painting this summer.  Work begins around 9 a.m. and will go 'till about one-ish.  As per the Carl Glaser Amendment, donuts will be provided.
Additionally, N2N is in a national competition to win money for a $5,000 cleanup!  Apparently Fort Collins is in competition with Lexington, KY. This is the deal:

  1. Vote for us!  Eddie Montgomery and Troy Gentry of country music duo Montgomery Gentry are the recipients of the 2010 Academy of Country Music/The Home Depot Humanitarian Award.  As the recipient of the Humanitarian Award, Montgomery Gentry will receive a KaBOOM! playground built in their honor by The Home Depot. This year, Montgomery Gentry wants fans to help pick the city where their playground is built and Neighbor to Neighbor's community at Coachlight Plaza Apartments in Fort Collins is one of them! Please help us bring this extra help and recognition to our project by voting for us online!
    To vote, just log onto
    www.homedepot.com/acm from April 12 - 30, 2010 and choose Denver/Fort Collins.

Jim also tells us that he has a tool, i.e., a "Fat Max" implement of destruction.  If it's yours, claim it soon or it will be absorbed into the United Sertoma Tools for Destruction.

Shawn Dunnigan, as he did last year, is putting together a team for Relay for Life, June 5th and 6th.  Walking begins at 4 p.m. and goes until 8 a.m. the next day.  Shawn invites YOU to come and walk if you'd like. . . . talk to him to be on his team, or just show up and help out.  Last year he raised $2,000 for cancer research.  This year the Board has already donated $500 toward his goal of $3,000.
Call him to help out!

Brad Dusek tells us:  It is with great pleasure that I announce my employment with Cornerstone Mortgage Company!!  During these past 8+ years at First National Bank I was blessed and will forever be grateful for the opportunities afforded me there.

In 2006, First National Bank of Omaha’s mortgage lending arm, Cornerstone Mortgage Company, was bought by its original founders Marc Laird and Judy Belanger. I am excited to announce that I have recently decided to join them in the terrific company they have built.

This decision was not made lightly, but I felt that it would ultimately serve my clients’ best interests to become a member of the Cornerstone family. It is a full-service mortgage banker with more than 50 offices in 13 states, including Colorado, Nevada and New Mexico. Founded in 1988, Cornerstone is the seventh-largest independent mortgage company in the U.S., and is a Top 30 National Lender. I firmly believe that with Cornerstone behind me, I can offer my clients a wider variety of products and services to help them meet their financial and home-ownership goals.

Last Friday, Lynn Oesterle-Zollner, the Executive Director for CASA of Larimer County, spoke with us about her organization.
CASA is an acronym for "Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children".  This has been one of our club's favorite organizations for years and years, 'cause they do exactly what we advocate . . . help kids.
The mission of CASA of Larimer County is "to provide a volunteer advocate's voice in court and a safe environment for family interactions for children who are the victims of abuse, neglect, or domestic conflict".
Lynn told us that sometimes the kids who are caught up in these situations only have one contact throughout the entire ordeal (that can stretch on for years), and the constant is often the Advocate.  Believe me when I say that this person can change a child's world.

Ken Borrett recently bragged on his wife, Kay's, artistic ability.  He further enhanced that first brag with a second ($5) brag telling us that she didn't get Best of Show, but she was awarded the Winsor & Newton Award.  Not only that,
her painting sold!

Additionally, she was notified, just last Saturday,  that her art has been accepted into the live auction part of Richard Schmidt's Fall  auction, one of only 50 chosen out of about 250!

Larry Scheinost had a $5 brag for his wife Marilyn.  He told us how she was diagnosed with a "very aggressive form or breast cancer", that she has been fighting for the last year.  She's had everything from surgery to radiation to chemotherapy, and just this week had a Pet Scan that shows NO SIGNS of cancer!!  Congratulations, Marilyn!!

Brad Burns bragged that
"It's raining today, it will be raining tomorrow, and I have an open house"

A blonde was playing Trivial Pursuit one night... It was her turn.
She rolled the dice and she landed on Science & Nature. Her question was, 'If you are in a vacuum and someone calls your name, can you hear it?'
She thought for a time and then asked, 'Is it on or off?'

IOU recently discovered in the Brag Box . . . . can you make it out????

Last week, Rob Allerheiligen reported that his 16 year old grandson was playing in Chicago for the National Hockey Championship.  Well, seems his team didn't win.  Not only did they not win but they didn't end up in third place.  Curiously enough, technically speaking, as Rob puts it, they ended up in SECOND!  Not too shabby, at that!

We will be meeting at the Aztlan Center beginning on June 4th.
