It's another LA Law!

Larry Abrahamson

There is a current ground swell demanding the arrest of George Zimmerman for shooting unarmed, 17 year old Trayvon Martin.   The emotions are high in this case and there are some very valid questions being asked about the investigation.  Without the answers to those questions however, it would be irresponsible to make assumptions based on news reports or information from investigative reporters.  Let me try to clarify a few things that seem to be missing. . . . .

Seems our own Norm Rehme recently cleaned up at a state photography convention!  He entered 4 prints (maximum allowed), and received (1) Judges Choice award (2) 3rd place black & white and (3) 2nd place portraits.  Of course, he forgot that he also took highest scoring print and PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR!!  Phwew!  Whatta' guy!

A $5 brag was given for our CSU basketball team for winning . . . . the first half of a game they were
pretty much trounced in the second half.

Located approximately 30 miles (48 km) southwest of Austin, Texas, the Hamilton Pool Preserve is a historic swimming hole which was designated a preserve by the Travis County Commissioner’s Court in 1990.

A brag was then given about the Buffaloes winning the second half.  (Obviously an interloper in the club!)

It was recently announced that we are about $230 SHORT in the Sertoma shirt department.  It is asked that you volunteer to pay for your shirt, please, before our Sgt. at Arms has to track you down.

Okie told us that it was Autie Anne's FREE PRETZEL day!  Unfortunately, that was about 3 weeks ago.  *sigh*

We've got a work project coming up on April 19th at the Boys and Girls Club in Wellington. 8 - 5.
Two shifts of people, including some volunteers from HP will build stuff.

NORM Rehme had a $20 brag for having recently begun a new job at the
trust department of Home State Bank!

Brian Soukup

Frank Johnson had a brag for Brian Soukup, who recently announced that he will match $50,000 of donations raised for the Homeless Day Services Initiative – an effort to provide year-round daytime services to the homeless, something not currently available in
Fort Collins.
Brian helped build the original Mission homeless shelter and now has donated funds to pay for the 1,800-square-foot, two-story expansion.  It will be named the Brian Soukup Center to Love and Serve, in recognition of his support.  And he's one of US!!

We recently had a work project at Crossroads Safehouse, in which Lee Cooper, Bill Brown, Jim Bernecker, and myself
painted, drilled, installed, and made beautiful!

Lee Cooper (l), Jim Bernecker, Bill Brown (r)

Tim Miller had a brag a while back on "one of our members and an associate" who recently put in probably 80 hours of their own time (!!) helping Bob Reed's daughter, Carol, finish cleaning out the pharmacy.  PAUL REED and Zach deserve special recognition for going all out!  And Zach isn't even a member of the club!

Paul Reed bragged that two weeks ago his daughter was just one word away (astrophysicist) from reaching the State Spelling Finals.  She ended up placing SECOND in the regionals!  She came with Paul to lunch, and I'll tell ya',
I would have given it to her just 'cause she's so cute!!

Woody recently had a check for a HUNDRED BUCKS, celebrating his age, which went unmentioned, and
buying some "floor time" to talk about the Foundation.  I put the gist of what he talked about in the last
Newsletter, but in case you missed it, here it is again, truncated:
Besides whatever interest we gather on it, we supplement the Foundation fund with monies from the brag box, and money from members for birthdays and anniversaries.  There is a drawing at the end of the meeting, and the drawee receives $20 for staying 'till the end.
The rest of the money is deposited into our Foundation.  That would be the Community Foundation of Northern Colorado .  They keep things on the "up and up", and give us regular reports of how much we have, which I update in this newsletter when I get a new number.
There are other ways we can fund this, as well.  Any part of your estate can be donated.  I'm told it's pretty easy to add a codicil to your will to donate some percentage.  Your insurance policy can be similarly instructed to pay off some percentage (or ALL), if you're so inclined, to the Foundation.  Next time YOU have a birthday or anniversary, brag about it with a check, if you can, and help us reach our goal of $75,000!

Josh Benedict, our V.P. of Membership, says we're not going to organize a membership drive!  Instead, we'll look for those unique individuals such as those with split personalities, where we can get a two-fer, while only paying
International for one.  Th' boy's always thinking!

Cliff Bergen's wife, who had a shoulder replaced recently, is said to be doing well.  I know we all wish the best for her!

Well, did you figure it out?  See below for our new SOW!

The Hazel Dormouse or Common Dormouse (Muscardinus avellanarius) is a small mammal,
and the only living species in the genus Muscardinus.  It is 2.4 to 3.5 in long with a tail of 2.2 to 3.0 in. It weighs .60 to .71 oz,
although this increases to 30 to 40 grams (1.1 to 1.4 oz) just before hibernation, from October to April-May

This "mini-newsletter" has been brought to you by the letter "H".  Or, as they say in Egypt, N24, where the form of the letter most likely stood for a fence, or posts.  It is also a voiceless pharyngeal fricative

LA Law, cont.
irst, there is an angry insistence that George Zimmerman should be arrested.   An arrest made before the filing of charges is justified if one of two requirements is present.  There must be a potential danger of flight or there must be a potential danger that the suspect will commit other crimes if not taken into immediate custody?   When a member of the community has no significant prior record and is claiming self defense, it would be hard to justify to a court that any of the conditions exist that would necessitate an arrest before charges.   Those who want the arrest “now”, want it for punitive reasons, not for the reasons required by law.

Second, a lesson that is being forgotten is the lesson that should have been learned from the North Carolina Lacrosse team incident.  In that case the public pressure from Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and Nancy Grace, as well as the top Duke University administrators forced the police and prosecution to abandon their own sense of ethics and investigative procedures by falsely charging a number of innocent men.  As a result, a very good coach who stood by his players was fired, innocent players lost scholarships along with their reputations.   Their families suffered through extreme embarrassment and humiliation that was completely unjustified.   This was all done because those responsible in pursuing justice lost sight of their sworn responsibilities and succumbed to the pressure from the media and certain high profile spokespersons demanding “ justice”. The only information in the hands of the public was from impressions and sound bites as well intense claims that the “untouchable” white elite athletes were taking advantage of a young black woman.  But it was all wrong.  The families and coaches suffered tremendously, and unfortunately when the truth came out that the young stripper had lied, there was not a single word of public apology offered to the Duke students, their families or coaches.  The injustice here was the knee jerk reaction to what it “looked like” on the surface – let’s not make the same mistake.
o, IN MY OPINION, let the investigation continue, let the grand jury make a decision without pressure from the public or media, and let the chips fall where they may.  But the media, the self appointed spokespersons and politicians should stay out of it.  There will be time to criticize the investigation and the handling of this case at a later date, but not now when the objectivity of evidence gathering is so crucial.
