NEWS of little import . . . . .

Things You Should Know:

Woody went home Aug 1.  His daughter Kelly is staying with him.  He is getting around pretty well I hear, can even go longer distances with a cane.  If you ask him, he would say that he's feeling great.
Who among us, if they broke their hip at 100, could say the same?  Wait!  It was D-Day that Woody was at, not the war of 1812 ~  my bad ~  But I know we're all lookin' for him to HURRY BACK!!

Paradoxical Quote of The Day From Ben Stein:

"Fathom the hypocrisy of a government that requires every citizen to prove they are insured... but not everyone must prove they are a citizen."

Now add this, "Many of those who refuse, or are unable, to prove they are citizens will receive free insurance paid for by those who are forced to buy insurance because they are citizens."

We have a new member in the works, Scott Arledge.  He has submitted his membership, and was even at training for beer sales this year!  He's 28 (way to go Bernecker, who recruited him), and works at First Citizens Bank.  More info
as I get it.

Our Prez Pro-Tem for the next 3 weeks, Rob Allerheiligen (and you thought he was gone!!), told us today that our newly installed prez is going to be gone for THREE WEEKS  We're told he's gone to "some foreign communist country", and will even MISS THE FIRST FOOTBALL GAME!

We're also told that our new "Communist president, Dr. Reid", would like to change the "new Communist regime" by starting at 12:20 to get the speaker on a little bit earlier than usual, and try to finish up earlier, as well.  This way, the "unretirees" can get out a little earlier so they can get back to work.  That worked pretty well today, except that one member, (who shall remain unnamed, Carl), did not arrive until 12:15.  He DID get to hear part of the Q & A, so it wasn't a total loss.

Robbery!  Hundreds and 50s ONLY!  If you were there, you are still chuckling at that punchline from Rob!

Lee Cooper bragged today (with a check for the Sertoma Foundation) that he and Sonni just celebrated their
60th Wedding Anniversary!  Just think, I was TWO YEARS OLD when they married!!  WOW!

John Stouffer turned up today (as well as BRIAN SOUKUP!), just in time to make a brag for HIS 50th anniversary!  (That would be STOUFFER bragging, btw)

Sertoma Meeting (2) at McCoy's, every Tuesday morning at 7 (thanks, Mr. Young!)

A Sign-Up sheet was started for the first home game on September 8th.  At this point we only need 8 more!  Now, you might notice that September 8th is NEXT SATURDAY, so if you CAN work the game, contact Josh Benedict and take a load off his mind.  He says he will have parking passes for us next Friday, so be at the meeting to pick 'em up!
By the way, you can wear khaki shorts this year!  AND, if you have a Sertoma shirt, WEAR IT!  Otherwise you will have to wear an Ovations shirt.

Bobbo Kopplin told us his 43rd anniversary (with HIS wife) was kind of bittersweet, 'cause his mother-in-law broke her hip!  I know that sounds like a bad joke, but it isn't.  He told us April was not home, of course; she went to Illinois to see what she could do to help, but I know they were together in spirit.

Ken Borrett

Ken Borrett told us today that (with a $10 brag!)that "It took him 71 years, but it finally happened yesterday (8/30) . . . . . he got a hole in one!"  He was playing at Highland Meadows.  He says the icing on the cake was that he and Pat won their game!  WOW!!  (I've always said I'd rather be lucky than good, eh??)

Jim Manning had a brag today for a man he never met.  Neither have we, he told us.  Sure enough, his brag was for a friend of his father-in-law, Tom Bryan (why does that name sound SO familiar!??!).  Buster Shaw, a "Pacific Marine" from Rhode Island and Georgia, passed away recently.  Jim bragged on him because he WAS a Pacific Marine, landed at Guam, and won the Purple Heart.  Too bad we didn't know him!

My friend Jim Bernecker failed a Health and Safety course at the Senior Center today.

One of the questions was:

"In the event of a fire, what steps would you take?"

"F***ing' big ones" was apparently the wrong answer.

Ronny Bush had a $5 brag for running (literally) into Georgia Gould, Fort Collins' own Olympic gold medalist, on the trail while mountain biking!  Seems they met, head-to-head, and she yielded the trail, only to dive into the rocky scrub on her bike.  No damage done, luckily!

Brian Soukup then spoke up and told us how Georgia is HIS niece-in-law to be!  She is planning to marry his nephew next weekend in Brian's backyard!  Next Thursday at 6 in the square there will be a celebration, apparently, in her and Janay Deloach's honor.  Janay, of course, is Ft. Collins' own Olympic bronze medalist in the broad jump.

I had a brag, in that I lived through my own bike wreck.  Two weeks ago I was haulin' ass down Lemay when a car jumped out in front of me.  I tried to go left to cut around behind it, but 1) my coefficient of grip failed me, and, as
da' colonel would say, 2) I hit a gravity well.  I went down like a 200 lb. sack of potatoes and slid a ways on freshly laid blacktop.  Needless to say, the blacktop suffered no damage.  I'm still limping from my cracked rib and bruised thigh.  My bike didn't get a scratch on it (going along for the ride ON TOP of me), but I did SMASH my helmet!

Bernecker has set an ambitious goal of a DOZEN new members for our club by the end of the year!  Jim tells us that if we are "too shy" to ask someone to let him know and HE will be happy to talk to them!

Rob told us that the Board, as usual, donated excess monies over 10K, but retained the 10K to carry over to
"the new Communist Regime".  Part of that money we donated in the last Board meeting resulted in a nice letter of "THANKS!" from the Larimer County Food Bank.

We had David Persons, "quasi-retired" ex-editor of the Windsor Beacon as our speaker today ~ if you missed this meeting you missed a fascinating speaker!  With almost 40 years of experience, it was really interesting to hear the inside story, although the quote "Once a newspaperman, always a newspaperman, seemed appropriate on more than one occasion).  (it was also interesting to get the inside scoop on Mr.Cord!)

A few weeks ago, Gary Cassell had a check to celebrate his birthday ~ "now three quarters of a century!"

I would like to take a minute to thank everyone that makes this newsletter possible.  Everyone who send me notices or pictures, or updates goes toward helping keep the club together through the power of communication.  Thank you Gary, David, Tim, Nathan, Norm, Jim, and Larry, in particular, and everyone in general for making this club what it is, a true force for good in the community!

It was brought up that our own Ron Lautzenheiser received a GREAT writeup in the Doloradoan for his work with Project Smile.  Indeed, without Ron, PS would not be in existence.  He makes US ALL look good!  Way to go, Ron!!

Carl Glaser had, apparently, a brag a few weeks ago about 1) being Republican and 2) vote for Cyndi Nettles for Senate
Syndi Nettles-Anderson

BOARD MEMBERS!  Be aware that the new regime has rearranged our Board Meeting to the second WEDNESDAY of the month!  We will meet on September 12th at The Fort Collins Board of Realtors, 110 W. Harvard.  Way to go, Nathan, for finding us a new place to meet!  p. 970.223.2900

He spent some time at Fort Clatsop, but was not in the service at the time.  Where is Fort Clatsop?  OR He retraced the route of Lewis and Clark to the Pacific

Worked in the hospitality business in a mountain town.  What town?  Family owned motel in Idaho Springs

Carried a gun as part of his job once.  What score did he get in the marksman test?  There was no test.  Got the job when the previous deputy shot out some windows in town in a routine traffic stop.

Has 3 children two of whom live in other states.  Name the other states.  NE,  TX

Worked with his father who helped construct a significant military complex.  What complex?  Air Force Academy
